A visceral, gripping story for all those who loved Alex Garland's The Beach
As Ute and her husband Jerry travel to a remote area on the west coast of South America, they decide to visit a recently established eco retreat called Villa Pacifica. The resort, run by a group of eccentric expatriates, offers a luxuriant refuge—in the middle of an arid and poverty-stricken region—to an exotic menagerie of large cats, monkeys, giant turtles, and birds of paradise, which have been rescued from traffickers. When a huge storm descends on the coast, travelers and locals are left to fend for themselves. The hothouse world that teems below the surface of Villa Pacifica rises to engulf everyone. Madness begins to take hold, and everyonr starts questioning their own sanity. Brilliantly written, hauntingly atmospheric, this novel will leave a lasting impression in the minds of its readers.
Villa Pacifica Kapka Kassabova Books
It’s the sort of book that draws you in. Characters are skilfully woven into the unfolding story. Sparking prose and sharp observation gets you quickly enmeshed in this strange tropical world and milieu where people are not always what they appear to be. As the narrative unfolds and the characters reveal more about themselves,Throughout the book, an atmosphere of controlled steaminess and eroticism permeates the pages, and I found myself turning pages like with a Ken Follet, to find out how the clashes of character and the plot are resolved. There is a long build up to the final unravelling, and towards the end, you find yourself embroiled in a kind of magic realism – which takes you unawares, and creates an unsettling feeling that stays with you long after.

Villa Pacifica Kapka Kassabova Books Reviews
Once I started this book I found it difficult to put down; I became drawn into, and captivated by the developing story. the individual characters are vivid and believable, and their human frailties and strengths are well portrayed as they deal with the enforced intimacy of living in a luxury resort, set in an otherwise poverty stricken region.
The story is haunting, full of tension, and the plot has many twists and turns,as well as moments of "madness". It conveys an evocative sense of time and place, and I particularly enjoyed the "magic realism" underlying the story telling.
I thought the author's use of metaphors and similes was generally well done, but occasionally one would strike me as rather over-blown,e.g. "the sun was an egg poached in the clouds". However, this was a minor irritation because essentially I felt engaged by the writing, and I find that I am still thinking about the characters and the story.
